SteamPlant Event Center Guide
Arts, Culture, and Community: Experience the SteamPlant Guide
The SteamPlant Event Center is a vibrant hub for arts, culture, and community events in Salida. Housed in a beautifully restored historic power plant, this multi-purpose venue hosts a diverse range of performances, exhibitions, and gatherings throughout the year. From live music and theater productions to art shows and community festivals, the SteamPlant offers something for everyone. The SteamPlant's history is deeply intertwined with Salida's industrial past. Built in 1887, the plant originally provided electricity to the town, powering its homes and businesses. As Salida grew, the plant was expanded and modernized, playing a vital role in the community's development. In the late 20th century, the plant was decommissioned and fell into disrepair. However, a dedicated group of community members recognized its potential and spearheaded a successful effort to transform it into a cultural center. Today, the SteamPlant features a theater, art gallery, conference rooms, and outdoor event spaces. Visitors can attend performances by local and national artists, view exhibitions of contemporary and historical art, and participate in workshops and classes. While the SteamPlant itself doesn't have a dedicated restaurant, it often hosts events with food vendors and is located within walking distance of numerous restaurants and cafes in downtown Salida.
